Aircraft Spatial Awareness

This teaching tool will be used by Aerospace Engineering students to gain a deeper understanding of how aircraft control surfaces move. Students can control the aircraft from both inside and outside of the cockpit to visualise the moving components. Clicking on the aircraft will display the internal structure and all forces shown on the aircraft are dynamic. Student progress is tracked and students can guess the centre of lift and centre of mass.

Features

  • Full physics based yoke & flap and rudder interaction
  • Accurate & simulated aerodynamics of a C172
  • Walk-around to inspect the aircraft and click on surfaces to see internal structure
  • Player can guess Centre of Mass and Centre of Lift with accuracy rating
  • Online data dashboard with extensive detail on each play session

Solution In Action.

This application is currently deployed within Swansea Universities Aerospace Engineering department and is being used to provide first and second-year undergraduate students with access to a virtual Cessna 172.

Students from all backgrounds gain valuable experience and spatial awareness around a common general aviation aircraft. Simulated forces provide context for traditional textbook theory and allow for practical learning.
